Using my unique skill set for video games

I started off my journalism career writing about video games. It was always a thrill learning from developers and spotlighting their hard work. Over the years, I’ve also gotten opportunities to work on several games in a quality assurance capacity and do mock reviews for others.

My background as an editor and critic aids in my work as I’m able to spot grammar and style guide issues while also being able to voice my feedback in a concise and constructive manner.

Quality Assurance

Sekai Project

I’ve worked with Sekai Project in a QA capacity for a year and a half. I’ve completed six projects all to deadline and have done multiple passes. Beyond spotting any programming bugs or errors, the role includes text editing and making sure Steam rules are adhered to.

Text Editing

Due to my extensive background in journalism and as an editor, I’m able to ensure that the company style guide is adhered to. I’ve worked for many publishers with house styles, so I’m able to adapt my editing process while also spotting any grammatical errors.

Localization

Most of the games, and light novels, I’ve worked on are being translated from Japanese text and feature plenty of Japanese culture. A key concern when doing QA on these projects is making sure the localization is true to the original intent and respectful. Spotting any potential issues that players may have is part of my job.

Consultancy

Indie Games

To help indie game developers release the best games possible, I’ve done affordable mock reviews. I’ve worked on a wide range of genres including fast-paced first-person shooters and strategy titles. Highlights include Mothergunship and Hypergun.

WWE 2K20 Patch

After a disappointing launch marred by technical issues, the team at 2K overhauled WWE 2K20. Once its biggest patch was released, a mock review was done to let the team know how the game would’ve done critically if not for its initial tech issues.

3 out of 10

For both Season 1 and Season 2 of the episodic gaming series 3 out of 10, I collaborated with the developer to give feedback on mini-game tuning and humor. Both seasons are free on the Epic Games Store and are a hilarious spoof on video game development.
